Built by the seventeenth-century Mogul emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal combines Persian and Indian architectural styles. It took two decades and twenty thousand men to create the white marble monument of love, a surviving symbol of Mogul splendor and power.
