Description
Quilts have been made in myriad cultures throughout human history. The generally accepted definition of a quilt is a textile made from two layers of fabric with a layer of padding between them, and quilted textiles can be used as covers, hung on walls, and worn. Quiltmaking techniques include three broad categories: patchwork, applied work, and quilting itself. Most quilts consist of either pieced or appliqued tops, which are then quilted to secure the layers together. Many designs are combinations of all three techniques. Quilts can be lightweight, made simply from two layers of fabric, or heavy, padded with an old blanket or an even older quilt. The front and back can each be a single piece of fabric, or pieced from many, or just a few smaller patches of material that can be new or perhaps just useable scraps from old garments. Elaborate applique work, or charming, naive folk art, can decorate a quilt top. Quilts made in the Western European tradition are usually regarded as "typical," but the art of quiltmaking encompasses much more. Even traditional quiltmaking in Western Europe-which includes forms generally regarded as "American," and practiced in many parts of the New World-covers a vast variety of styles and designs. And when we stray outside the Western European tradition, the ring widens into a remarkable array of fabric artefacts. This book seeks to show, with more than 250, full-color photographs, the diversity of quiltmaking traditions from around the world.
